November 2010 - While the historic Maritime Museum Amsterdam building undergoes renovation, preparations for its new interior are in full swing. It was announced this month that the team of Hypsos | Bruns was awarded the tender for extensive exhibition realization for the project.
Scheduled for opening in the summer of 2011, the refurbished Maritime Museum will reflect the rich maritime history of the Netherlands through more attractive and interactive exhibits. Upon completion, the facility will better accommodate a new generation of museum visitors with expectations of doubling attendance in the coming years.
The main feature in the new Museum will be “The Maritime Experience”, a highly interactive attraction where visitors are thrown back in time and can learn about what it must have been like to work on a Dutch East India Company (VOC) ship and experience being at sea during the heat of a battle or a raging storm. The design and execution of “The Maritime Experience”, as well as all the Museum’s new exhibitions, will be done by a team led by Hypsos as the Main Contractor, together with MET Studio as museum designer, and Tinker, as lead content provider.
Integrated into the work is the provision of 130 climate-controlled showcases by Bruns. These are specially developed to maintain temperature and humidity controlled filtered air within the showcase while providing the best display and conservation environment for the over 1,000 unique and precious collection pieces.
Managing Director of Hypsos, Mark van Drieberge stated, “We design, manage and execute large scale leisure projects around the world, but being able to work in our home country for such an authoritative museum like the Maritime Museum Amsterdam is an honour. At all levels of our Hypsos organization colleagues have reacted enthusiastically to the fact that Hypsos will be executing such an important part of the Maritime Museum.
We have already started-up the engineering phase, which means translating the creative designs into technical drawings for, amongst others, our carpenter crew. According to expectations, this phase will be finalized in December and be followed by start-up of the production phase in our factory and preparations of the exhibition works on site.”
